Students Showcase Their Innovations At The NIW 2022

The annual Nairobi Innovation Week (NIW) was launched in 2015 to promote Kenya’s and the world’s innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems. Throughout the years, The University has continually encouraged and supported student innovations with the Hult prize UoN Chapter-winning teams being given a chance to showcase their innovation at the Nairobi Innovation Week 2022.

StoFresh(formerly called Impact farm) was this year’s Hult prize UoN on-campus winner and will represent the university at the Nairobi regional summit. They also won the Digital Innovations for Business Resilience in the East African Community, Kenya finals and will represent the University at The East African finals.

Stofresh is an innovative platform that gives smallholder farmers access to shared cold storage facilities and a market for their products. Farmers can sign up in person at one of their agents or by sending a USSD code to a phone number of their choosing. They then have the option of reserving storage space on a per crate, per day basis. Farmers pay 0.5 dollars per crate each day.

When selling their produce, it is inspected and packaged before it is stored in the warehouses. Third-party logistics partners manage distribution when market pricing is appropriate for the farmer to sell their produce. Farmers will have more control over when who, and how much they sell their products and they will be able to better support themselves and their families as a result.

Since winning their OnCampus, StoFresh has created 12 jobs, a website, and a contract with a cold storage facility, which they are most excited about.

StoFresh, Ohana Investments, and Junto(all UoN Teams from Hult prize) will participate in the regional summits in locations throughout the globe. An immersive digital platform allows thousands of competitors to present their social entrepreneurship concepts to expert panels. At each summit, the successful teams go to the Global Accelerator, where they are one step closer to receiving $1,000,000 in prize money.
