Accelerating Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sustainable Tourism in Africa

Over the past 20 years, tourism has become vital to African economies. The African tourism sector has global potential due to its unique cultural and environmental features, characterised by diverse heritage, wildlife, and fauna. This potential is ripe for exploitation by youth through innovative entrepreneurial interventions.

Traditionally, tourism stories about most African countries have often been narrated by outsiders visiting those countries. However, more and more residents in Sub-Saharan Africa are becoming increasingly aware of the challenges and opportunities of tourism as a vehicle for local socio-economic development.

The University of Brighton and its the Centre for Change, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (UK), Strathmore University (Kenya), University of Ghana (Ghana), Sustainable Travel and Tourism Agenda (Kenya), and Africa Tourism Partners (South Africa) have come together to explore opportunities for youth employability and entrepreneurship in the tourism sector.

Through peer-to-peer knowledge exchange interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaborations, the project expands youth entrepreneurship and policy dialogue. In addition, the project will stimulate sustainable youth entrepreneurship through innovation hubs, mentorship, and access to innovative virtual learning and entrepreneurship platforms.

The project’s success is based on a co-constructed and co-delivered knowledge exchange model, which will benefit staff and students from the partnering institutions and beyond.

British Council – Innovation for African Universities Programme (IAU)

The British Council IAU programme is implemented by the Centre of Excellence (CoE), a partnership between the City, University of London, the University of Nairobi, and ChangeSchool UK.

The Programme comprises 24 UK universities, SSA universities, and entrepreneurial ecosystem organizations. The Programme is running in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana & South Africa.

The CoE looks forward to working in partnership with the Accelerating Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sustainable Tourism in Africa project in Sub-Saharan Africa to exchange knowledge and ideas to strengthen the role of universities in entrepreneurship ecosystems.
